Doing business in China: the lessons for Israeli businessmen

SHANGHAI, APRIL 15-18 – Shanghai International MBA (SIMBA) in partnership with the Graduate School of Management, University of Haifa held the 2nd Joint International Seminar, which goal was to create an opportunity for mature Israeli and Chinese MBA students to gain the experience of working together in multinational teams. The highlight of the seminar was Team Projects, which included the collection of background data, interviewing company managers in Israel and China, data analysis, report writing and presentations. The projects covered business strategies, management and marketing challenges and problems of actual Israeli companies working in China.

Zvi Shalgo, CEO, PTL Group was invited as a guest speaker to present his insight on doing business in China from the Israeli prospective. His lecture covered the main differences between Israeli and Chinese mentality and ways of doing business. As PTL Group specializes in management of foreign sales organizations in China, Zvi shared his experience and know-how in managing distribution channels and sales managers in China. He also covered manager-employee communication styles in China and proved how important it is for the foreign companies to have a local presence in China. Zvi supported his lecture with three real-life case studies describing the common problems arising when doing business in China and the possible ways of their solution. His lecture was actively discussed by Israeli and Chinese students during Q&A session.

We believe Israeli students gained a better understanding of the Chinese business environment and the mentality of Chinese managers. The Chinese students gained a better understanding of how to work with international businessmen and companies.
